Sure, I could look up the statistics and find out that it could be. Prices would range anywhere from $40-$80 (maybe more?) - just to see the doctor, and that's not including the cost of meds.
What happens when someone isn't covered by insurance, let alone one doesn't have a proper health plan - to no plan at all? 'The poor'.
What if I told you, that you can go to a particular store, and buy over-the-counter meds (exactly the same medication humans receive) at a................pet/fish store?

I decided to test this theory out on myself - medication wise - as I've been battling a nasty tooth abscess in the last few days or so.
The very same tooth I talked about a few years ago in amkon started acting up...AGAIN. The pain was EXCRUCIATING, and I thought at times I would pass out. It seemed nothing would help - save for a trip to the dentist to either extract the molar or perform a root canal....picture having a 'brain ache' from drinking a cold slushy. Now picture that throbbing *non stop* for days on end (no breaks in between). Going out of your mind, and feeling as though you're 'giving birth' in your head.
Let me rewind to a few months ago and more...
I had heard/read about the damage that occurs when people use fluoride toothpaste. Good Lord, fluoride is supposed to surpress/stop up cavities...right? Wrong. Extensive useage actually damages tooth enamel, and then some.
Back a few years ago, after the first painful stint with my molar - after it got worked on with the dentist, I decided to REALLY up the stakes with oral hygiene. I cut out ALL fluoride toothpastes and switched to natural ones that didn't contain *Sodium Laureth Sulfate*
(SLES), is a detergent and surfactant found in many personal care products (soaps, shampoos, toothpaste etc.). SLES is an inexpensive and very effective foaming agent.[1] SLES, SLS, ALS and sodium pareth sulfate are surfactants that are used in many cosmetic products for their cleansing and emulsifying properties. They behave similarly to soap.
Bascially the same crap they use to clean/strip floors. And it's in our food products. Shampoos, toothpaste, etc.
In any event, I had run out of the 'natural tootpaste', and stupidly picked up on a fresh tube of Crest-Pro Health sitting under my sink. That was a few weeks ago. It 'seemed' to do the trick, cleaning my teeth, but then about a week ago or so, I started noticing that my teeth were losing their enamel. I wasn't drinking harsh pop (sodas), had already cut out foods that I knew would do damage to the surface of my teeth, but still....something didn't feel right. My teeth weren't loosening, but I was getting the odd twinges of pain.
Then...it happened....all over again.
THE FUCKING PAIN.
I was in such a bad state that I couldn't be arse to wait for a doctor, and took matters into my own hands.
Clove oil helped, but was only temporary. Rinsing with lukewarm salt water - temporary. Tea bag - temporary
You wouldn't believe the shit I tried to alleviate the pain. The one thing I didn't do was alcohol. I don't drink every day, nor every 2nd day, nor every 3rd day or whatever as some think I do. Believe what you want, but I DO have responsibilities at my end; that requires a sober mind, and I've had to put off tending to my customers in this last while because of this goddamn abscess. My appetite was such, that I could only tolerate 'protein shakes' during the pain.
When a tooth gets abscessed, to a 'severe amount', the side that it affects, will SWELL up. My face looked like it had a small softball in my cheek. I NEEDED antibiotics.
I'm on the 3rd day of Erythromycin that I bought from a fish supplier (without prescription), and the pain is ALMOST none existent. The swelling is down to a dull roar and will be gone by tomorrow or the next day. I take ibuprofen to combat, and went back to the natural toothpaste that I used.
Without antibiotics, who knows what the outcome would be.
But to be able to buy them over the counter without a script (do your homework on 'how much the body needs') was heaven sent.
It works in a pinch. And believe you me...it was QUITE a pinch in my circumstance.

While UK newspapers are declaring that the UK has become the “violent crime capital of Europe”, crime rates in the United States have actually fallen dramatically over the past 20 years. This was also a time period during which gun laws became much less restrictive in the United States. Today, murder rates in the U.S. are generally far higher in cities that have very strict gun control laws (such as Chicago) than they are for the general population. The Washington Examiner, quoting retired Four-Star Admiral James Lyons, writes: “the attack on the American Consulate in Benghazi… was the result of a bungled abduction attempt…. the first stage of an international prisoner exchange… that would have ensured the release of Omar Abdel Rahman, the ‘Blind Sheik’…” But something went horribly wrong with Obama’s “October Surprise.” Although the Obama Administration intentionally gutted security at the consulate prior to the staged kidnapping, former Navy SEALs Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty disobeyed direct orders to stand down, saved American lives, single-handedly killed scores of attackers…and the attackers, believing that Obama had betrayed them, tortured Ambassador Chris Stevens and dragged his body through the streets. Some will say that Admiral Lyons’ accusation is not a smoking gun. We agree; that’s exactly why Congress must investigate Benghazi-gate. Moreover, we firmly believe the problem with Admiral Lyons’ assertion is that he is only scratching the surface; the full and complete truth may be much, much worse. Swaggering onto the set of Fox and Friends, Rivera bloviated: “I think we have to stop this politicizing.” And Rivera issued the following veiled warning to Republicans: “Do we want to try and influence the election with a tragedy that happened in North Africa?” Ironic, isn’t it? Barack Obama played politics with the lives of Americans; like Rivera, the media covered Obama’s rear and threatened to accuse anyone and everyone who mentioned it of “playing politics.” Weak-willed Republicans apparently took Rivera’s threat to heart as Rivera also said that Republican Senators John Barrasso, James Inhofe, and Bob Corker, who all sit on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, “all agree that the supercharged atmosphere around the story — prudence dictates that these hearings be postponed until” after the election. Well, the election has come and gone. Congress now has no excuse. The American people needed the truth before the election; but now that Obama is back in the White House, real conservatives must demand answers. The American people deserve to have those questions answered; and moreover, the American people deserve justice.
