A company that creates medical-marijuana dispensing machines says its stock is getting way too high.
Medbox MDBX -92.68% shares surged 3,000% this week -- from roughly $4 Monday to $215 Thursday -- before falling to $100 after executives sought to dampen investor enthusiasm.
In a news release today, the company said that the stock’s rocket launch, which sent its market cap skyrocketing from $45 million at the start of the week to a staggering $2.3 billion, was ignited by a MarketWatch story Tuesday on how to invest in legalized marijuana (see How to invest in legalized marijuana .) (That’s about double the market capitalization of retailer Jos. A. Bank Clothiers.) The stock, which fell around 50% in early trading Friday, still hovers at $100. “We believe an appropriate trading range is between $5 and $10 but, alas, the market will do what it will do,” says Medbox founder Vincent Mehdizadeh.
Click to Play How to invest in legalized marijuana Several states made recreational use of marijuana last week. There are several small-cap stocks that stand to gain from marijuana's growing acceptance, Quentin Fottrell reports.
At the height of trading this week, $600,000 to $700,000 worth of purchases were made, an unusually high volume for a company of this size. “It was astonishing,” Mehdizadeh says. “We couldn’t really understand why that was happening other than that there was a high demand for stock with limited supply.” It was “thin volume,” but Mehdizadeh says he doesn’t know whether it was one hedge fund or several big buyers.
The company says it’s also investigating ways to minimize any potential shareholder losses. Medbox is in discussions with its attorneys to see if it can reward early investors with company-owned shares should the price they bought at in recent days fall significantly. “We don’t want those investors to have sour feelings about what happened,” Mehdizadeh says. “Obviously day traders are having a field day lately trading our stock.”

But it’s very risky to invest in drugs prohibited at a federal level, experts say. Nearly 500 of the estimated 3,000 dispensaries nationwide have closed or were shut down by the federal government in the past year, according to StickGuide.com, an online directory for medical marijuana dispensaries. Currently, Medbox has 130 dispensers in the field and is due to install 40 more next month, and says it’s looking at the broader pharmaceutical market.
While the rush investors got from the company’s wild surge this week may be matched in coming years, the Hollywood, Calif.-based company says it is confident in its future prospects. Medbox reported a third-quarter revenue of $1.3 million, up from $850,000 in the second quarter. Medbox forecasts revenue of $24 million by the end of the fiscal year 2014 and $48 million by the end of fiscal 2016. It expects earnings before interest, depreciation and amortization to remain at a “healthy” $10.2 million and $22.1 million during those periods. “Real companies don’t need hype,” Mehdizadeh says.
“We feel within 10 years we could legitimately have share prices hit $215 again,” Mehdizadeh says. Currently, there are around one million shares available for trade and, this time next year, he says there will be another one to two million shares trading. Although the company focuses primarily on medical marijuana, he says the temperature-controlled dispensing machines could also be used in prisons and 24-hour drug stores for a larger range of drugs.
IN THE WORLD Someone needs to PUT AN END to this Practice of Giving Billions of Foreign Aid to others in the World I say FUCK Those People and everyone should say the same. Americans this Thanksgiving and Chrismas will be going without FOOD and other necessary stuff. The Faggots in American GOV should be paying for this. And By Faggot I mean CRAP people (no relation to Sex) I'm a LifeTime AARP member (cost was $75 in 2000) I got this recent Email:
Dear ROBERT, Do you know where you'll be eating your Thanksgiving dinner? While many of us are sitting down at the Thanksgiving table next Thursday, millions of seniors are at risk of not getting dinner at all – on this holiday or in the days that follow. Across the country, there are nearly 9 million older Americans who wake up each morning without knowing if they’ll have enough to eat. Your gift can help change that. When you support AARP Foundation, you help give struggling older adults the assistance they deserve and ease their concern about where their next meal will come from – on Thanksgiving or any day. ROBERT, will you join us today? Make a tax-deductible donation by November 22 to help meet our $50,000 goal to prevent senior hunger.
Your gift to AARP Foundation today will have a direct impact on our work to help struggling seniors across the country:
$8 can help a hungry senior stay full for a day.
$16 can help an older adult get nutritious food for a weekend.
$24 can help an older American stay full for three days.
$56 can help a senior secure food for a whole week.
When it comes to connecting older adults with community resources, improving the quality of food at food banks, and more, every dollar makes a difference.
The NDP is falling, the Liberal Party is surging and somewhere Stephen Harper is grinning.
That is the narrative, at least, of a new Ipsos Reid poll conducted for Postmedia News and Global Television.
According to the survey released late Thursday, if an election were held tomorrow, 34 per cent of us would vote for the Conservatives, 30 per cent would vote for the NDP, and 26 per cent would for the federal Liberals.
What's most intriguing about this poll, however, is the trend lines. Since June, the NDP have dropped eight points while the Liberals have gained eight.
I can't friggin stand the Liberals here. I'd rather the Conservatives and NDP in Sync. "Keeping each other in check."
I think the 'be all to end all' was when Dalton McStimpy was in power and he promised all his shit...and no sooner when he was brought into power, the fucker re-nigged on ALL 250 f'n promises he made before his election. I'm soooooooo glad he's gone...you have no idea.
BUT...I fear they did their toll already. McGimpy stepped down. Bout fuckin time.
Iceland is the greatest place on earth. They protested peacefully, arrested bankers and politicians, forgave debt - including mortgage debt, and are using almost completely renewable energy. Plus, they don't build where there are fairies and are the offspring of Vikings.
COUNTRIES WITH 100% RENEWABLE ENERGY
Cahora Basso, Mozambique Which countries have the highest percentage of renewable energy – care to guess? I suspect that names like Germany, Denmark or Spain might spring to mind. They’re certainly making good progress, but they’ve got nothing on the world’s renewable energy leaders. There are countries in the world powered entirely by renewable energy, and some that are even net exporters of green electricity.
These pioneers are overlooked for a variety of reasons. For one thing, they’re out of the way places. Agencies tracking the progress of renewable energy often focus on the OECD countries or the G20 and forget to look elsewhere (like this). Sometimes they have patchy data and are omitted from research.
Most often its a matter of categorisation – what is and what isn’t considered renewable energy. Hydroelectric and geothermal electricity generation are frequently listed separately from solar, wind and tidal energy, even though they are technically renewable too. There are various reasons for this. A large dam might be clean energy, but disastrous for the environment in other ways. If it runs off melting ice, a dam could be renewable but not actually sustainable in practice in the long term.
Others simply leave hydro and geothermal out because they’re older technologies, and including them in renewable energy statistics might make people complacent about their percentages. This categorisation issue is actually quite a problem. US States each decide independently whether they will count hydropower as renewable or not, which rather confuses national energy targets.
Still, taking that broader perspective, here are some forgotten pioneers of the renewable energy world:
Iceland – Built as it is on a volcano, Iceland has tapped the earth’s natural warmth to supply 85% of the country’s housing with heat. Between geothermal and hydropower, the electricity supply is 100% renewable energy. Iceland has so much geothermal capacity that their ambassador to Britain is in discussions about whether or not they could build an interconnector into the UK grid. Lesotho – The small mountainous African country of Lesotho also has practically 100% renewable electricity, thanks to the Lesotho Highlands Water Project. The network of dams exports water into South Africa, providing almost all of Lesotho’s power along the way. The project has its controversies, including serious corruption. Albania – with large scale hydroelectric facilities, Albania used to be a net exporter of electricity. Unfortunately droughts have seriously reduced the capacity of its dams, and along with widespread corruption and the stealing of electricity, there are now power shortages. Nevertheless, the country runs on around 85% renewable electricity. Paraguay – Itaipu dam, one of the world’s largest, provides 90% of Paraguay’s electricity and 19% of Brazil’s. It cost $20 billion, took 30 years to build, and displaces 67.5 million tonnes of CO2 a year. Bhutan – Another small mountainous country that can boast electricity as one of its major exports, Bhutan wires 75% of its power to India. Mozambique – Mozambique’s energy infrastructure tells a sad story, with the ambitious Cahora Bassa dam completed just in time for the outbreak of civil war. Underused throughout the 80s, it came back online recently and now exports electricity into South Africa and Zimbabwe. Norway – Britain’s top three sources of electricity are gas, coal and nuclear. Norway’s are hydroelectric, geothermal and wind, but they’re an interesting case. Norway’s renewable energy sector has developed to serve the export market rather than domestic consumption. If you look at Norway’s generating capacity it would be around 98% renewable, but if you look at the country’s consumption, that falls to 24% because most of the clean energy Guarantees of Origin have been sold to neighbouring countries. I could also mention Costa Rica, Laos, Colombia, Malawi, Nepal, Belize, and a dozen others. Many African countries, with small domestic consumption, have renewable energy percentages to shame the G20. I don’t mention these examples because I necessarily recommend their approach or endorse the projects concerned. Some of them are controversial, others have been badly managed or are rife with corruption. Besides, not everyone has a big river they can dam, or mountain regions that can support hydropower systems.
I mention them because I keep reading news articles mentioning the world leaders in renewable energy, and naming Germany, Denmark and Spain. And I keep hearing people dismissing ‘renewable energy’ as unworkable, and then only talking about onshore wind and solar PV.

For more than 200 years, this book concealed the arcane rituals of an ancient order. But cracking the code only deepened the mystery. Image courtesy: Uppsala University
The master wears an amulet with a blue eye in the center. Before him, a candidate kneels in the candlelit room, surrounded by microscopes and surgical implements. The year is roughly 1746. The initiation has begun. The master places a piece of paper in front of the candidate and orders him to put on a pair of eyeglasses. “Read,” the master commands. The candidate squints, but it’s an impossible task. The page is blank. The candidate is told not to panic; there is hope for his vision to improve. The master wipes the candidate’s eyes with a cloth and orders preparation for the surgery to commence. He selects a pair of tweezers from the table. The other members in attendance raise their candles. The master starts plucking hairs from the candidate’s eyebrow. This is a ritualistic procedure; no flesh is cut. But these are “symbolic actions out of which none are without meaning,” the master assures the candidate. The candidate places his hand on the master’s amulet. Try reading again, the master says, replacing the first page with another. This page is filled with handwritten text. Congratulations, brother, the members say. Now you can see. For more than 260 years, the contents of that page—and the details of this ritual—remained a secret. They were hidden in a coded manuscript, one of thousands produced by secret societies in the 18th and 19th centuries. At the peak of their power, these clandestine organizations, most notably the Freemasons, had hundreds of thousands of adherents, from colonial New York to imperial St. Petersburg. Dismissed today as fodder for conspiracy theorists and History Channel specials, they once served an important purpose: Their lodges were safe houses where freethinkers could explore everything from the laws of physics to the rights of man to the nature of God, all hidden from the oppressive, authoritarian eyes of church and state. But largely because they were so secretive, little is known about most of these organizations. Membership in all but the biggest died out over a century ago, and many of their encrypted texts have remained uncracked, dismissed by historians as impenetrable novelties. It was actually an accident that brought to light the symbolic “sight-restoring” ritual. The decoding effort started as a sort of game between two friends that eventually engulfed a team of experts in disciplines ranging from machine translation to intellectual history. Its significance goes far beyond the contents of a single cipher. Hidden within coded manuscripts like these is a secret history of how esoteric, often radical notions of science, politics, and religion spread underground. At least that’s what experts believe. The only way to know for sure is to break the codes. In this case, as it happens, the cracking began in a restaurant in Germany.
Ortega was born to a impoverished railway worker and had to drop out of school at 13 to work. He began as a delivery boy for a clothing shop and worked his way up to become a salesperson. While working retail Ortega had the idea to sell inexpensive versions of quilted bathrobes, claiming it was unfair that only wealthy woman could afford to dress well. He used this as the founding principle behind the rest of his retail ventures and built his empire on top of it.
Ortega's rapid gain corresponds with a general rise in retail stocks. Cheap supplies and increasing demand for moderately priced clothing have made it a good year for retailers. Nine out of the world's 25 richest people made their fortunes in retail, according to the Bloomberg Index.
It's a loaded question that so reeks of patriarchal double standards we'd almost rather not go there, but since today our good friend Science seems to have come up with at least part of the answer, it seems best to go ahead and just answer the question.
A new study published Tuesday in the Journal of Neuroscience has revealed that the hormone oxytocin may play a role in maintaining monogamous relationships, reports the Los Angeles Times.
How? Well this is one of those rare cases where the design of the experiment is nearly as interesting as the finding, so listen up.
A team of researchers at the University of Bonn in Germany rounded up 57 heterosexual men, about half of whom were single and half of whom were in monogamous relationships. They gave some of the men a nasal spray of oxytocin and the others a placebo, and then had an attractive female researcher who they had never met walk towards them. They were instructed to tell the woman to stop walking when there was a socially "ideal" distance between them.
Predictably, the single guys let the woman get nice and close — about 20 to 24 inches away. This was true whether they received the oxytocin spray or not. Disappointingly, the men in relationships who received the placebo spray also let the woman get about 20 to 24 inches away.
It was only the men in relationships who received the oxytocin that opted to put a greater distance — 28 to 30 inches — between themselves and the attractive woman. (Read more)
Not surprisingly, Oxytocin is also used to induce labor in pregnancy.
The hormone your body makes during labour is called oxytocin. It is made in a small area of the brain and released into the blood stream via the pituitary gland. How your body actually starts labour is still not known, in spite of many years of research. We know many of the hormonal changes that happen, but the actual trigger remains elusive.
Oxytocin has been produced in the laboratory and the synthetic drug is used to start the uterus contracting. Unfortunately, it is not well absorbed in the stomach and needs to be given by a drip. This route of administration also means that the concentration of oxytocin can be increased or decreased should your contractions be too intense or not strong enough.
The campaigners founded the Rolling Jubilee project to buy-up distressed loans, where repayments are in arrears, for pennies in the pound and then cancel them free of charge to "liberate debtors at random". That debt will include large amounts of student loans and oustanding medical bills owed by people struggling to meet repayments.
Individuals or companies can buy debt from lenders at knock-down prices if it the borrower is in default or behind with payments and are then free to do with it as they see fit, including cancelling it free of charge.
Campaigners estimate that 77pc of American households are in debt and that 62pc of all bankrupcies in the country are caused by large medical bills, which can be virtually impossible to pay for those without insurance. An estimated one in seven people in the US is currently being pursued by a debt collector.
As a test run the group spent $500 on distressed debt, buying $14,000 worth of outstanding loans and pardoning the debtors. They also consulted lawyers on the legality of doing this on a large scale.
Yesterday they launched a fundraising campaign with a variety show and telethon in New York and have already raised $269,913 (£170,206) - enough to buy over $5m worth of debt and write it off.
Strike Debt, a campaign group behind the project, said that it had no way of targetting which person's debt they were buying: "Anonymous accounts get bundled together by other firms and sold as a whole. We have no input into whose debt is included.
"We hope to buy as much debt as we can and, more fundamentally, to get people asking why it is that debt can be so cheap to everyone except the debtor. Remember: you are not a loan, and you are not alone."
