Business and a business mind has gotten this country into lots of trouble through its history. For some unfathomable reason, business wants to behave in a way contrary to human lasting benefit and business’s own long term benefit. Cases in point: The business men who were instrumental in the founding of this nation could not see past their immoral, unethical needs as slave owners. As a result, slavery became part of the fabric of this new democracy, a democracy that immediately contradicted its own Declaration of Independence and prostituted its Constitution. A business agenda drove those fateful decisions that abide with us in many forms to this day. Manifest Destiny is the nice patriotic re-write-history name given to the decades of genocide on the Native population within the growing borders of the American states. The push across the country was driven by business: the timber business, the railroad business, the coal business, and then oil. Let us not mistake the pablum we were taught in school for any measure of truth. Manifest is the operative word here: manifest wealth. If slavery weren’t enough of a blight on the conscience of business, then that which slavery was used for is the next example: tobacco, sugar, the creation of abject poverty, and a maligned and marginalized portion of the the US population. The tobacco industry should not exist; it is amoral. It is in the business of killing men, women, children, and the unborn. The sugar industry has become the feedlot for obesity rivaled only by the modern agri-genetically engineered produce business. Europe said no to genetically engineered produce and grains. When we ask how they can imbibe so much cream, butter, and wine and be healthier than us Americans – I say, “read your food labels, friends. If it’s not organic its genetically modified and you/we are the lab rat with the cancers, ADD, asthma, and hypertension to prove it.” Sugar kills brain cells, blood cells, nerve endings. Sugar killed the slaves that chopped it, boiled it down, and sacked it. Why business thrives on that which vampirizes and kills human beings, I don’t know, but it is why I do not want a business man in the White House. The Great Depression: yep, business again. The poor got really poor, middle America dried up in the Dustbowl. And business people and bankers had a hay day. They scooped up all the property they could, cashed in on the misery of millions of people. Then there is the Industrial Military Establishment, creating wars because it makes money. US gas grenades litter the hovels of Palestine. Military government contracts are “sweet” to the business’s who land them. It’s interesting: death in the business of war is part of the bargain but not so in the “health-care” industry. There the avoidance of the death is the big business. The medical business overall does not want you or me to be well. There’s no money in that for them. If we knew that the herbs that we call weeds growing in our yard could help with headaches or high blood pressure or kidney stones, then who needs the latest pharmaceutical? Oh, and didn’t you know that you are never supposed to feel any emotions either?- we’ve got just the right pill for you. Unethical, immoral, untruthful, coercive, in denial, and largely unsympathetic, the medical business cares for itself, its profit, and for keeping me and you in a loop of symptom management not cause understanding or true addressing of issues. Am I anti-business? No. I am for well-being, compassion, and wisdom in all regards. I am for creativity and ingenuity that serves. I denounce greed, avarice, selfishness, and separatism. I will fight against ignorance, codified wealth and codified poverty. There are many good people in business, and some businesses that are for good purposes and meet those goals. But the economic disaster that continues to sweep across the globe is not because of good-natured business. It is because of greed and unethical business and business models. I am voting for President Barak Obama because I respect him, his ideas, his vision, and his true concern for his fellow citizens. I am not voting for Mitt Romney because he has stated clearly where his allegiances lie, what he would do that will undermine this nation, its people, and its freedoms. And he has said that he doesn’t care about the ramifications of his business-minded policies that will have lasting harsh negative effects immediately and for years to come.
